Since years and years, the AFNIC (the association that rules the .fr domain names) restricted the ".fr" domain names to companies and associations, "moral beeings", and strictly forbid individual people to buy those names.
They must have thought we, french citizens, physical beeings, were just useless pieces of $!&='?, with no idea and no need for a domain name.
I guess they thought the web was just a marketplace. Somewhere to sell and buy things. Another marketting tool. They may have been scared to have too much work handling random ppl requests, it's so much easyer to work with companies and associations. They are in CHARGE of the .fr, and as usual in france when handling the "public property", their goal was to make this charge as light as possible ;)
But maybe i'm wrong there, and maybe .fr shouldn't be considered something every french citizen should be able to own. A public property.
Anyway, the result is that .fr names were just forgotten. It was just too long and painfull to get them. Not even talking about the prices which were nothing like decent and justified. The french communities and ppl just switched to ".com", ".net" or the other domain names in other countries we could get easyer. Time after time, it became clear that ".fr" domains were no place to find anything interesting, creative, artistic or FREE (except products to buy and localised companies websites).
Looking at the massive adoption, use and spread of german ".de" domain names, the gap with ".fr" names became obvious.
Suddainly, last week, the AFNIC decided to wake up from a long long sleep. They must have realised we are the very last bunch of people refusing to recognise the right of physical beeings to acquire french domain names. Maybe they had a look at the german statistics and the "80% of the .de domains owned by physical beeings" stat made them face the truth, they are years LATE ! Yes, once again, france is years late!
All in all, now that the grateful companies have been well served, we, simple people, can now lick the bones and fight for the remaining pieces of rotten meat.
My friends,
I'm sad to see the way we were treated.
Lets show them what they can do with their ".fr" domains.
Lets not give them a second chance, they may look victorious and claim how right they were and how smooth it all went.
My french friends,
may you BOYCOTT the ".fr" for all your creative activities ! Do not offer it the light it doesnt deserves. Do not help this supermarket to shine. May ".fr" domains forever be a sad place, for sad people. A place with no freedom, as it's always been !
